Cax,

<< Got the numbers per pop for cingular's proposed 18 month rollout of the overlay to GSM/EDGE. $19 per pop or about 3.6 B for 200 M pops. On the other hand, PCS upgraded to 1x for $3.35 a POP. 800M/239 POPS. >>

PCS didn't flip.

Flip's aint fun, and ain't cheap.

PCS has it easy.

PCS has one frequency band.

PCS has no AMPS heritage.

PCS has no gear installed pre 1996.

PCS is essentially one network not patched together like Verizon or Cingular.

Incremental cost of GPRS to EDGE appears to be $2 and change from what I can fathom.

Included in the 3+ B referred to yesterday are some costs related to extra capacity not related to the overlay (stated in the webcast).

Check what PCS and Verizon have spent on getting ready for the 1x upgrade.

In PCS case, it is well better than 800M. Good news is that Verizon and PCS will both have state of the art nets when done, but then again so will AWS, Cingular, and VoiceStream.
