re: 30-year bond

I believe (just a hunch) that this bond has been largely replaced by other long-term bonds.

There has been a wave of interest lately in I-bonds, (been buying a lot of those lately myself), and the feds don't want the public socking away too much money that would be better spent propping up the economy.

Recent Capitol Hill debate on the economic stimulus package included a proposal to re-institute the old "war bonds", but opponents said it would be better for people to spend money than participate in a patriotic flood of war bond purchases.

Also, I read a recent news story which said the Treasury Dept. was calling long-time holders of bonds which stopped earning interest years ago, to encourage the people to cash the bonds.

Interesting that there are times when the federal government wants you to invest in it, and other times when it doesn't. <gg>
