An Excerpt from todays Washington Business Journal. ASHES TO ASHES. The Minnesota restaurateur who opened a lodge-like, meat lovers restaurant with a cigar-smoking Back Room on Rockville Pike has decided to smoke up downtown - and other areas.
Sheldon Jacobs, who heads the two existing Shelly's Woodroast restaurants and publicly traded parent Woodroast Systems Inc., opened Shelly's Back Room at 1331 F St. NW. The "civilized cigar parlor" has a small menu - mostly appetizers and sandwiches - but an extensive cigar selection.
"This is a cigar bar that is not just a fad," said John Asadoorian, retail broker with Grubb & Ellis who handles site selection for Shelly's Back Room. "They are very excited about this. This is what they are looking to roll out."
Possible areas: Tysons Corner, Alexandria, Bethesda, Baltimore and another in the District.
The Woodroast restaurants are not a priority, Asadoorian said. The full-service restaurants had been interested in sites in Bethesda (it fell through) and Tysons (on hold).
Jacobs sold one-third of Woodroast Systems to the public in June 1994 when it operated just one restaurant in Minneapolis. The stock traded recently in the $2 to $3 range.
