Once, I had to fill out AMT forms for California, having moved to Oregon. This required balancing info from both state tax returns, as both wanted to ensure they extracted the max allowable amount in light of what the other state extracted. Had I not moved mid year, I'd not had to fill out the AMT stuff. Eventually, I gave up trying to untangle the AMT forms, sent CA a check I figured would cover the liability and pled inability to comply with their filing requirements and general disgust. They sent me a small refund of the amount I submitted.

I don't attempt to justify the AMT. I hear that it is an attempt to ensure that sophisticated strategies to minimize taxes don't succeed too easily.

I think the real question should be "Why are we repealing the AMT on corporate taxes retroactively, and ignoring AMT for individuals?" along with "Will rebating 25 billion in past Corporate AMT taxes improve the short term economic prospects?"
