Well, I think we can agree that bin Laden and his band of merry men are not innocent angels.

For the American government, they really need little, if any, evidence to do what they want. Our policy is hypocrisy and situational morality. Gunboat diplomacy has never really left our psyche. We need to feel better about ourselves and put others on notice, and when you are the big boy on the block, it is do-able. If you do not go along, we restrict trade. If you want to be with the big dog, we can trade.

For the Russians, they harbor resentment for the beating they took from the Afghanis, want revenge, have a hand in the development of all that oil coming out of the Caspian (who knows, we may now agree to run the pipeline through the Soviet Union), and they are still taking a beating in Chechyna. They have little sympathy for the Moslems. Was the explosion in Moscow a year or so ago ever determined to have been done by terrorists from Chechyna?
