FIFA Signs Insurance Accord for Soccer World Cup With Berkshire

By James Ludden

Zurich, Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- FIFA, soccer's ruling body, said Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. will insure next year's World Cup against cancellation, two weeks after Axa SA demanded more money to provide the cover.

FIFA also said it will sue Axa for withdrawing the insurance for the May 31-June 30 finals in Korea and Japan. Berkshire won't be allowed to terminate the new agreement, FIFA said.

While the terms with Berkshire Hathaway's National Indemnity Co. unit were unavailable, the original price for Axa's policy was 27.4 million Swiss francs ($16.8 million). FIFA had already paid premiums of 16.4 million francs.

``I'm delighted that in just a few days FIFA has managed to seal a new contract and that we can count on a strong insurance partner in an emergency,'' FIFA President Sepp Blatter said in a statement received by email.
