SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 31 (Reuters) - Credit card issuer Providian Financial Corp. (NYSE:PVN - news) said on Wednesday it has hired investment banking firms Salomon Smith Barney and Goldman, Sachs & Co. to help in evaluating a broad array of financial and strategic alternatives.
