Doug Gurian, 38 (from the Sunday NYT)

Doug found pleasure in simple things, like two-inch thick steaks, the ocean, and his two young children. He would call his friends out of the blue, put the receiver up to the speaker, and say, "Listen to this riff, man," and then just as abruptly hang up. He went to West Point, but was anything but straight-laced.

In the summers, he would take his family to Fire Island, and after removing his shoes wouldn't put them back on for days. Each morning started with a jump into the ocean. "He was the most quirky, fun-loving guy," said his wife of almost 10 years.

Gurian worked at Radianz, a financial technology company. On the morning of September 11th, he was attending a technology conference at Windows on the World.

Doug loved his children most of all. His youngest daughter is too young to understand what happened to her daddy, but his older son (7) recently told his mom, "I just don't feel I'll be happy again."
