Oh, I get it ... the gaping hole was actually an intergalactic worm hole which immediately transported anybody who was unfortunate enough to enter it into another dimension of space and time. A dimension where the dominant life form is aquatic. Where changing location requires the movement of flippers, or other marine-like extensions. Thus, the "fin" comment.

Sometimes, you amaze me with your ability to compress all pertinent information into a few concise terms (in this case, into ONE term). Was there a special course in college that taught you that ability?
