Jim,

> I have also suggested, that the Old Testament has its fair share of violence as well. Others disagree with that point of view and suggest that Christianity is a much more loving and compassionate Teaching.

I do not believe anyone can oppose your view that the Old Testament has its fair share of violence. However the key word here is "Old Testament". The very fact that we have a "New Testament" is the proof that Christianity ("The Religion" and not the Belief for which as I expressed before I believe the "belief" is at a personal level and far far more pure) has evolved for the better and therefore "The Christinaitly Religion" has been sanitized through the New testament. The question is would Muslims have the willingness or the desire to evolve and sanitize Islam into having a New Quran and Old Quran?

Also to justify the violence in some religion just because some other religion has it, would be to justify for example Hitler's crime simply because there were similar people like him prior to him in man's history! Once again this thread is about Understanding Islam and not "evenagelizing" it for better or for worst.

I tend to agree with you with your following statement and I think that would be a good idea:

Who can summarize that relative to Islam? I am sure we can count on IGIT to do so relative to Christianity. Mar$ I am sure can give us the summary for Vedanta. There must be some Buddhists around also. Sultan, what's your territory?

And I believe chuckj also has a good understanding of the Zoroastrianism wich was one of the main religions that influenced Islam in a great manner, and tried to incorporate some of its teachings into the religion and hence the Arabic culture of the time.

If Understanding Islam requires first understanding other religions, then so be it. However I am not realy sure if that is the answer because then I am afraid we may digress from start discussions on understanding these other faiths and religions.

Anyway but I hope we dont start "evangelizing" for other faiths and religions here, because - and once again - this thread is to understand Islam and why 1.2 billion people insist on calling themselves Muslims and believe the teachings of Quran (as it is) can be validated using the 21st century civilized world standards.

Namaste!

- Addi
