Samsung ships 2.5G GPRS mobile phones to Germany

Samsung Electronics Co. has exported 5,000 mobile handsets based on European 2.5-generation GPRS technology to T-Mobile International AG of Germany, Samsung said yesterday.

This is the Korean electronics leader's first shipment of General Packet Radio System GPRS mobile handsets.

GPRS phones feature high-speed wireless Internet access at double the speed of second-generation Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phones.

Industry experts forecast that GPRS mobile phones, due for commercial release next year, will dominate the European market for four to five years as the introduction of third-generation mobile phone service has been delayed due to insufficient investments.

Samsung plans to secure a 10 percent share in the European mobile phone market by supplying 500,000 units this year and 8 million units by 2003.

The company also said it was ahead of Finland's Nokia Corp., the world's top mobile handset maker, in the race to provide Europe's first 2.5G mobile handsets.
