" Mukhdoom Javed Hashmi, acting president of the Pakistan Muslim League, was arrested around 2 a.m. during a police raid on the house where he was staying in the capital, Islamabad.

Government spokesman Gen. Rashid Quereshi said Hashmi was arrested for amassing ``assets beyond his means,'' and was being held by the National Accountability Bureau, which investigates corruption.

The Pakistan Muslim League was the country's leading party before Musharraf's coup, and is still officially led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted in 1999. Sharif is now in exile in Saudi Arabia. Hashmi was staying in Sharif's house in Islamabad at the time of his arrest, officials said.

Political parties have effectively been sidelined since Musharraf came to power. The government is led by military officers and civilians who do not belong to any political parties."
