Today's personal spending data show the magnitude of the shift in consumer confidence.

Since this series started (in 1959) there were quite a few sharp drops in personal spending. All but one were isolated. Only once in 1986 there was a large drop in consumer spending followed by another (minor) drop the next month.

Now, if next month's data will show another significant drop in spending that would indicate that something has happened that is worse then anything seen in half a century.
