You are confusing configuration problems with stability.

Athlon users are bound to have more configuration problems than Intel users because Athlon users are generally more sophisticated than Intel users. I am not talking about overclocking, I mean in terms of adding memory, extra cards etc. If you don't change your system (or try and build one from scratch) then you won't have configuration problems with it.

As for stability, then I have to say I have had many more problems with Intel systems crashing on me for no reason. Then again we use Intel systems exclusively at work so it would be unfair to conclude that they are intrinsically less stable wouldn't it?
