"Athlon users are bound to have more configuration problems than Intel users because Athlon users are generally more sophisticated than Intel users."
There is another reason for AMD configuration/stability problems to be more visible. It is simple statistics. Since Intel share of PCs is 4:1, many more people are working on resolving issues. There are software issues, and hardware issues. If you look at Intel's "errata" list, hair stands on end, and heretic thoughts start to appear about how the poor Microsoft is when they tried to get anything that works out of Intel's errata. But because of market dominance, everything is tried first on Intel platform, and the enormous amount of issues are worked around before public appearance. Because of Intel dominance, any testing on AMD platform is second priority, which adds more skew to the publicity, and because of tremendous variety of OEMs, the effect is almost multiplicative. This is another reason why AMD needs to go for market share.
Even given all this disproportion, things like P-III-1.13 and i820/MTH happen in public, but some people tend to forget it. Accounting for this disproportion, it looks like AMD systems could be much more stable than it appears from web publishers who usually deal with too-new and likely self-unstable components.
