COM DEV's New CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO, all-IP, High Speed Wireless Internet Access System Scores International Success with Korea's Largest CDMA Operator
SAN DIEGO, CA, Nov. 1 /CNW/ - COM DEV International Ltd. (TSE:CDV) and Contela, Inc. announced today that they have been selected to provide a trial 1xEV-DO (evolution-data only) network to SK Telecom using COM DEV's all-IP, M/ERGY(TM) branded, CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO Base Stations, Core Network and Access Terminal equipment. The trial network will be deployed as part of an operational demonstration of 1xEV-DO technology and services in Seoul, South Korea that SK Telecom is conducting as part of its plan to build-out a nationwide 1xEV-DO network beginning in 2002.
"Receiving our first commercial M/ERGY order from SK Telecom, one of the largest CDMA carriers in the world, provides tremendous industry recognition of M/ERGY's competitive value," said COM DEV Chief Operating Officer, John Keating. "Together with Contela, we will be devoting all of our resources and capabilities to ensure a successful trial. Beyond the trial, the Contela partnership will continue to strengthen M/ERGY as we expect their 1xRTT and voice-over-IP technology to contribute to evolving subsequent versions of M/ERGY that will address both voice and data in an integrated IP platform."
"Our partnership is working very well. Contela and COM DEV have quickly come together as an integrated team," said Dr. Sun Park, Contela Chief Executive Officer. "We believe that we have developed the system and the team needed to meet the very high standards for performance and service set by SK Telecom".
SK Telecom announced in June of this year that it would deploy a CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO network in Korea and launch commercial service in 26 cities by May of 2002. This service launch coincides with the commencement of the Soccer World Cup being co-hosted by Korea and Japan, which starts at the end of May.
CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO technology provides a packet data-based system that enables CDMA operators to provide high speed data service with peak data rates up to 2.4 megabits per second. With the significantly increased speed and capacity offered by CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, M/ERGY operators are positioned to provide video and audio streaming, wireless Web browsing, interactive gaming and other next generation multimedia services, all without wires.
COM DEV International Ltd. announced in September that it had entered into an agreement with Contela, Inc. of Sungnam, Korea to market COM DEV's 1xEV-DO M/ERGY(TM), all-IP, wireless Internet system in Korea. The agreement also provides for future co-development and distribution of wireless systems utilizing Contela's CDMA 1xRTT wireless and VoIP technologies.
Last year, SK Telecom had operating revenue of 5761 billion Won (US $4.7 billion) and net income of 951 billion Won (US $775 million). SK Telecom has been the first to deploy every new generation of CDMA networks. Its early adoption of CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO continues its track record of pioneering CDMA technology to achieve extraordinary financial success.
