You must be confused again. From Anand's article, the 1GHz Pentium III whooped the Athlon in everything but OpenGL.

The reason why it did at the time was because AMD had such poor support from chipsets. The KX133 was buggy, slow, and low volume. But now, chipsets are plentiful, and the K7 is at its peak. The micro-architecture still has some headroom, to be sure, but it will soon by eclipsed by future Netburst cores. That's why AMD has to get to Hammer and SOI, ASAP. Otherwise, there isn't much room before they start falling seriously behind.
