Mr. George Plewes of Southwestern Resources reports
Southwestern Resources and Consolidated Jaba Inc. have initiated a second phase of exploration on the Tecka layered complex project located in Chubut Province, Argentina. The Tecka joint venture, which is held 45 per cent by Southwestern and 55 per cent by Consolidated Jaba, is located about 1,500 kilometres southwest of Buenos Aires and comprises 277,500 hectares of exploration concessions. Southwestern is the operator of the joint venture and can earn a 71-per-cent interest by spending $3-million (U.S.) on exploration over a three-year period.
The joint venture area is underlain by the Tecka layered complex, the largest unexplored environment of this type known in the world, and initial exploration by the partners has shown conclusively that the complex is similar to both the Bushveld and Stillwater complexes, which host large primary platinum-palladium deposits. First-phase exploration has also confirmed the existence of magmatic sulphides containing anomalous platinum-palladium values within specific layers.
During the first-phase exploration program about 280 square kilometres was mapped and about 4,000 soil and rock samples were collected for multielement analyses. A comprehensive study of the nature of various rock types which make up the complex was also completed during the first phase.
The Tecka layered complex has been mapped along a strike length of about 100 kilometres and width of 20 kilometres. Thickness of the complex varies from 1,400 metres to 3,000 metres. Several sulphide zones containing anomalous platinum-palladium values were delineated and are associated with low concentrations of pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Units containing anomalous platinum-palladium have been identified as olivine norite, anorthosite and gabbro. Detailed studies suggest the initial exploration phase was concentrated in the upper portion of the Tecka complex away from the ultramafic-mafic transition zone, which commonly hosts the high-grade platinum-palladium in these environments. The second phase of exploration will be focused on defining the lowermost units of the complex and to prospect within the ultramafic-mafic transition zone.
 Quality control
Southwestern has implemented a quality control program to ensure exploration best practice in sampling and analysis. All of the rock and soil samples are shipped in security-sealed bags to the Bondar-Clegg sample preparation facilities in Mendoza, Argentina, and the pulps are shipped to Vancouver for analyses. Platinum, palladium and gold analyses are by fire assay with an ICP finish. A partial digestion and 35-element ICP analysis will also be conducted on each sample. The Bondar Clegg Vancouver laboratory is an ISO 9002 certified lab that is preparing for ISO 17025 certification. It has participated successfully in the CANMET PTP-MAL round robin program.
Consolidated Jaba is a mineral exploration company with emphasis on exploration for platinum group metal deposits in politically stable areas of the world. In excess of 10 platinum group metal targets have been identified and prioritised by Jaba in other areas of the world and these will be the subject of future Jaba exploration activities.
