If the motherboard manufacturer did not follow the spec, it was their fault. Are you sure that this is what happened?

That was AMD's official line... Something about one of the components not being of the same high quality that AMD required... but how much truth there is to that, well, your guess is as good as mine. I wouldn't exactly put it past AMD (or Intel, or VIA, for that matter) to give it a "hey, it wasn't our fault" spin.
