Former Chicago police department chief of detectives, William
Hanhardt, pleaded guilty on October 25 for running a theft ring that
stole $5 million in jewelry from traveling salesmen. Hanhardt, 72,
whose plea was delayed a week after he consumed an overdose of pain
and sleeping pills in an apparent suicide attempt, faces up to 12
years in prison and millions of dollars in restitution payments.

A New York City man was indicted and charged with impersonating a
fireman and stealing watches from the Tourneau and Cartier stores
formerly located at the World Trade Center. Bronx resident Johnny
Dunham, 26, faces charges of burglary, fraud, petty larceny,
possession of stolen property and criminal impersonation. He allegedly
stole between six and 20 watches and $2,500 cash. Tourneau officials
told Reuters the wholesale value of the missing goods was $1.3
million.

Dunham is being held on $25,000 bail and will be arraigned on November
8. He faces a seven-year prison sentence if convicted.
