typewriter dude-
I think you attributed things to that letter that weren't there.
you could be right. let me get more specific because things that seemed obvious to me and really pulled my chain musta passed you right by or you saw them different than i did.
here's a copy and paste from the letter:
I want to know, I demand to know, if you love America. Do you pledge allegiance to its flag? Do you pray in your many daily prayers that Allah will bless this nation, that He will protect and prosper it? Are you thankful for the freedom that only this nation affords? A freedom that was paid for by the blood of hundreds of thousands of patriots? Are you willing to preserve this freedom with the spilling of your own blood? Do you love America? and if this is your commitment, then I need you to start letting me know about it.
if someone approaches ME and makes these kinds of demands i'm not likely to be too happy or communicative with them. if you like that kind of personal and spiritual interrogation... having to prove that your thoughts and prayers are acceptable to any stranger... without provocation... based upon your physical looks or your religious persuasion... then you are a VERY unusual dude to not get upset about surrendering freedom and liberty and basic guarantees of the US constitution and the bill of rights.
like the right to vote, rights ain't much good if'n ya don't exercise them once in awhile... <they get fat and lazy like polvie>
just for the simple fact that i value these liberties and rights for myself, i am willing to allow my fellow citizens to share and even EXERCISE them too... even if i'm afraid of them because of their, color, dress, religion, national origin, sex, age or private thoughts. (ps- i ain't afraid of 'em, but i got carried away with my sarcastic self- righteous oration and couldn't help spewing that out. <VBG>)
It sought communication and response, not imprisonment.
it looks to me, when i re-read the bolded type above, like it DEMANDED communication and consequently, the surrender of some personal rights (freedom of religion, the right to remain silent, submission to a search of the brain for undesirable thoughts, etc.). i didn't say it advocated imprisonment, i said, "letters and feelings like the one posted are the first steps toward letting that occur..."
i was wrong!!
it's good to read letters like that so some brave @ss like me will question and refute them.
but i still think the spirit of the letter sucks.
it smacks of fear-based distrust and bigotry.
that's my story and i'm stickin' to it because i have the right to any thoughts i choose to let drift through my head.
no one can take that away. NO ONE. because i am BRAVE dude, i am brave. it's the cost of freedom.
<drifts off the subject with visions of sugar plums, sailboats, wolves and naked angels dancing through his haid>
huh? what did you say?
i have no further comment on this subject. <G>
talk to the hand.
talk to my attorney... hey RR!!! sic'em!!
