Ben--Call it serious wishful thinking.

Since current Syquest management has scant holdings of Syquest, they probably see no upside in a merger--just a phase-out of their jobs.

Seagate would probably have to launch a hostile takeover. Of course, they'd want to know the terms of all the China and Indonesia deals. (Not being an M&A lawyer I have no idea what kind of "due diligence" can be done in a hostile takeover situation.) I don't know whether Syquest has any poison pills in place; also don't know what the impact of the all the outstanding warrants would be on a merger.

Despite my ignorance of all these points, I am serious in suggesting that Joe, who has a substantial position in Syquest, contact Seagate's CEO or chairman and float the idea. Might find out they've already approached Syquest for a friendly acquisition and were rebuffed.
