wanna_bmw,
re: You forget that AMD pre-announced that they would hit second quarter's record volumes. If that is not a good basis for Intel to base their calculations on, I don't know what is. One point for you. :)
Additionally, there should be a margin of error when these third parties make their guesses. It'd be a lot easier for those third parties if Intel came out with some hard numbers instead of just claiming every quarter that they either held or gained market share.
Intel could have easily sold more than they accounted for, which would increase the market share that Intel could claim. Could have, would have doesn't count unfortunately. ;)
You say that Intel can not be trusted, yet there has not been a single case where Intel has claimed no loss in market share, and at the same time, concrete facts have proven otherwise. That may be correct but - once again - Intel would be more believable if they provided analysts and the rest of the world with some hard numbers instead of fuzzy claims about market share gains/losses. Now, since we don't have the exact numbers we cannot tell if AMD's claims about their market share are correct either. However, personally I trust a company more that provides me with hard facts, i.e. CPUs sold in this case.
I think that AMD lost several points of market share to Intel in Q3, and they will lose several more this quarter. Can you please specify what range of numbers you define with the word "several"? Judging from all the reports about the PC market shrinking in Q3 I tend to believe AMD's claim that they lost less than one percent (0.7% if I recall the CC correctly). Not sure what numbers will be this quarter.
The market is improving, and more units are being sold, but AMD has not increased production as much. That's a clear indication that they have lost market share. We don't know yet exactly how much market conditions have improved and AMD has been ramping up Fab30 all the time this year. They probably produced more than the 7.7M CPUs they sold in Q3 since they already sold that many in Q2 and they should have even more capacity now in Q4.
All in all I think it will be best if we wait for the next CCs. Even then we probably won't know exact market share percentages for sure unless Intel is willing to provide some hard data (something I'm not holding my breath for).
