BBMan, you hit it.. academics in arts are often zoned

I once did a little exercise with my father
we reviewed all his university professor colleagues
we looked at the "success" rate of their children and marriages
it was astonishingly unfortunately disappointing
bear in mind that I am part of the sample
(the jury is still out on me, but even my vote aint stellar)

we had entire sets of children who were drugridden
children who never speak with their parents anymore
several who sought an alternative lifestyle (Broadway dancer guy)
a few in jail
one married a southern belle with zero brain -- imbecile children
many with divorced parents from adultery left & right
one guy has been married 5-6 times, compulsive womanizer
he continues to write for the city's major newspaper in a regular column

another vein of the same argument was the PC crowd
they thought all intellectual work was worthy
that nobody should be judged as unworthy
even if publishing press disagreed
unpublished writings and manuscripts circulated
then tenure was granted on basis of being socially kind and accepting
a temporary chairman became fulltime, on terrible move
the ramifications were near devastating
deadwood collected everywhere
the deans could not reverse the damage
the quality of graduate students disintegrated in a few years

then we looked at graduate students turned young professor
Marxists, greencard holders who hate the US
wow, what an eyeopener
the unemployed littered their ranks
just two months ago I met one of the philosophy BS degree holders who earned an MS in English
unemployed, clueless, marriage in danger, sadsack

I had the pleasure of keeping up with a few students and younger profs
several are extremely colorful
but I wouldnt want to work for them or see them run a business

my main hope coming out of this war is a rejection of mindless PC thought
esp when it undermines national and internal security
or when it undermines legitimate valuation of work
(which is and will always be vague)

but in the meantime, that entire environmt is nearly perfect for hiding truly dangerous people
it is a combination breeding ground and backwater
which is often largely dismissed as harmless
