Japan's Tomen Mediacom Plans ITV Trial TOKYO, JAPAN, 2001 OCT 18 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Tokyo cable TV operator Tomen Mediacom will test an interactive television (iTV) service in about 2,500 Tokyo homes early next year.
Tomen Mediacom, which operates under the Mediatti brand, said Wednesday its iTV service will be based on a system developed by U.S.-based Scientific-Atlanta [NYSE:SFA].
A trial in Tokorozawa will test how well the system delivers iTV applications like video-on-demand (VOD), TV e-mail, online shopping, news, weather, and sports information to subscribers.
The trial will begin next spring and last for six months, Tomen Mediacom said in a media announcement. The company then plans to roll out the service to cable TV operators.
Tomen Mediacom, owned by the Tomen Corporation, Olympus Capital Holdings Asia, and Pacific Century CyberWorks Japan, currently has stakes in five other cable TV operators in Japan and has said it is looking to take further stakes.
