Well, since I make my living in the media, let me qualify your comments. We do try to increase "eyeballs" to maximize ad revenue. However, news TRADITIONALLY has been a loss leader. It is only with the rise of cable networks that news became a profit center. As a result, there has been a significant shift in the behavior of news organizations. There is less analysis, Less thought put into reportage, and less ethical/moral basis put into the effort. The concept is, if we can report it...report it fast, sensational and make it as large as possible. No consideration of the hurt, or possible error, that can occur. Remember in "All the President's Men" when they had to get 2 corroborating sources to go with a story? Nobody does that anymore. |
