Japanese Cable TV Co. To Roll Out Video-On-Demand Jump to first matched term TOKYO, JAPAN, 2001 OCT 24 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Tokyo cable TV operator Tomen Mediacom said Tuesday it will roll out a video-on-demand service in Japan in partnership with U.S.-based Ncube Corporation.
Tomen Mediacom, which operates under the Mediatti brand, will first test the system on interactive digital cable TV customers.
The Japanese operator is running a six-month test of interactive cable TV in Tokorozawa for a six-month period beginning early next year. As well as video-on-demand, the trial will test applications like TV e-mail, online shopping, and interactive news, weather, and sports information to subscribers.
The video-on-demand service will provide movies via cable when requested by the subscriber. If the provider has access to a big library of titles, such a service replaces traditional video stores.
In its announcement Tuesday, Tomen Mediacom said Ncube, as well as providing platform software and its streaming media appliance, will also help the Japanese company get Hollywood content for the service.
Following the trial, the video-on-demand system will roll out across Mediatti's subscriber network, the company said.
Tomen Mediacom, owned by the Tomen Corporation, Olympus Capital Holdings Asia, and Pacific Century CyberWorks Japan, currently has stakes in five other cable TV operators in Japan and is looking to take further stakes.
Ncube is on the Web at ncube.com .
