The answer to his wives and immediate family would be no for 2 reasons.
1. He doesn't really care about them. They don't aid his effort. Their death would only do one thing, and he would relish it. See No. 2.
2. It would be more media fodder. "See how the infidels kill my helpless, defenseless family?"

Taking them hostage...now that is a different story. Hostage taking has a long and rich tradition in the Muslim world. It used to be a major tool in Western society, as well. Attila the Hun was a Roman "hostage" for many years at Ravenna. His presence in the Roman court created a situation that prevented either side from commencing hostilities.
I don't think that would really work with Bin Laden, however. He's just plain nuts. His standpoint isn't too dissimilar from that of the wacked out Japanese in WWII who held out in the hills for over 20/30 years. Victory or death.
Unfortunately for Bin Laden, he will likely wind up dead. Or fortunately, from his standpoint. Something tells me he won't be the martyr he hopes to be. It'll be tough to be a hero when you die like a cowering dog.
