Reports: 80 Taliban Killed, 800 Defect, in Fierce
Overnight Fighting

Eighty Taliban soldiers died Friday night as U.S.-backed Northern
Alliance forces attacked positions 19 miles south of the al Qaeda
stronghold of Mazar-i-Sharif.

Agence France Presse reported that the Taliban defeat came after
a three hour battle in the Balkh province, where opposition
forces gained control of the town of Aq-Kupruk.

AFP based its report on claims from Northern Alliance
spokesperson Qari Qudratullah, which have not yet been verified
by Western journalists who are unable to get to the region.

Qudratullah also claimed that as many as 800 Taliban troops
defected to the Northern Alliance, including the leaders in
charge of the Taliban in that area, ABC News.com reported
Saturday.

A number of Taliban vehicles, weapons and anti-aircraft missiles
were also captured, the network said.

Northern Alliance control of Mazar-i-Sharif would be an important
strategic victory, since it would cut Taliban supply lines to
western Afghanistan and the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan,
according to wire reports.
