>> Toshiba Mulls Mobile Phone Merger with Siemens

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba is prepared to merge its mobile-phone business with that of Germany's Siemens AG.

"From Toshiba's standpoint, a merger of its mobile-phone unit with that of Siemens is feasible," Toshiba president Tadashi Okamura told Handelsblatt. But he stressed that no concrete talks on this issue had as yet taken place.

Last year, Siemens and Toshiba set up a joint venture to develop Internet-enabled third-generation (3G) mobile phones. These phones are seen as the lucrative market of the future for the crisis-hit industry.

Telecoms equipment maker Ericsson and Toshiba rival Sony recently also announced plans to set up a joint venture for the developing and marketing of mobile phones.

Okamura praised an existing cooperation in research with Siemens as "very important". But he added it had not yet been decided whether the two groups would also move into jointly marketing their mobile phones.

In terms of technology, Okamura considers Toshiba to be in a leading position on the 3G market and is thus preparing to launch a global offensive. Up to now the group has focused on its domestic mobile-phone market. Siemens, on the other hand, is the world's fourth-largest mobile-phone maker and the number two in Europe.

Okamura forecast that once UMTS services were launched in Europe, Siemens and Toshiba would in any case be among the front-runners in this new market. <<
