You got to differentiate between decimal counting (where the zero is a "place holder", which is even more ancient then Aryabhatta) and the use of zero in the formation of an equation. By the way, the first attempt I know of determining pi, is pre Aryabhattra and pre Grecian as well, in the bible, it is approximated as 3 ("and thou shall make its circumference three times its diameter", free translation, referred to the holy tent in the pentateuch).
