MHZ wasn't the bar back then. It was model numbers. Most people wanted a 386 over a 286. Mhz only really became common place with the 486. That's not my recollection. Mhz was definitely big in the 286 days, and AMD sold 286s (at higher speeds than Intel offered) in direct competition with the 386.
