When the net was first popularized (it has actually been in existence since the mid-1970's), it was noted by many observers in the press that people tended to be blunter and often meaner than in real life. It was speculated that this was why so few women were on online (true then; not true now). It is easier to fire back a stinging rebuke if you don't have to look the rebukee in the eye and also have fear of physical violence on their part.

If the opposite has been the case with you, it may be a most unique reaction.
