Thanks, Alastair, I was not following all of Iqbal posts. I fear that there are powerful forces within the mainstream Islamic world that prevent those truths from coming to the fore. I don't really think however, that these barbaric behaviors are characteristics of Islam per se, they are characteristics of authoritarian dictators. They are using Islam as a cover, just as Hitler used anti-semitism as a cover for his expansionist desires. As a matter of fact both Iraq and Syria are considered "secular" Islamic states, unlike Saudi Arabia and Iran.
