"Sounds like a 1-in-a-million chance, right?" Dunno. Extremely rare. "How many computers are there out there?" Irrelevant. Say the chance is one in ten thousand. A company with ten thousand machines will experience this particular problem exactly once. So what kind of price preminum is it worth to avoid this particular problem? $100 per unit? Would such a failure really cost the company $1 million? This is nonsense. Now you might argue that IS departments think that the premium of Intel-based machines are worth it to avoid such low probability events, but that is an argument that those IS departments don't really have the skills to analyze such things. Most managers would be fired to use such reasoning, maybe those IS managers should be also. Wasting money based on FUD...
