Zeev, have you ever seen the movie, "Animal House"? (probably not, I would guess).

A mosh pit looks like the the part in the end where the nerdy Delta member knocks out the marching band's drum major and leads the band into an alley that has no exit.

The band continues follow the new leader and marches and crushes itself into the brick wall at the end of the alley while still playing.

A mosh pit is something like that, only much faster and physical. It looks like 100 kids kicking and screaming and punching in random anarchy (although there are some rules).
They don't usually do it to Beethoven (usually a form of metal rock suffices).

Take 100 suburban kids (mostly boys) who are pissed off about their parents, their schools, and the world in general, put them together in a dark arena with some hypnotizing lights and death metal at 130 decibels, and you've got the makings of a mosh pit. Some kids find it a nice release, as they just can't do that kind of thing just anywhere.

By the way, for popular music fans, Ben Folds' new song "Rocking the Suburbs" is a hoot.

I now know the 3-step. I only knew it before as the 2-steps forward, one step back routine. I guess I missed that other post.
