Re: Dealing with fanatics

I agree that fanatics cannot be reasoned with and must simply be taken out. The problem is how to do this without unnecessary collateral damage? I submit that even if one does not feel swayed by the moral argument, taking out entire populations to get a small number of embedded fanatics is not the quickest path to victory. It is far better, in both the short and the long run, to obtain the willing cooperation of local authorities in rooting out the real culprits. The Afghan campaign is a decapitation strike against Al Qaeda, but it will necessarily be followed by a global "mopping up" operation to root out cells wherever they may be found. We need brains more than brawn to accomplish this in the most effective way, but I am confident that civilization is equal to the challenge.
