1,200 more tribesmen join Taliban

PESHAWAR: Another 1,200 Pakistani tribesmen crossed the border into Afghanistan on Sunday, taking the total number to 4,400 volunteers in four days, the head of a religious party said.

Muhammad Ismail, a local head of the Tehreek Nifaz-e-Shariat Mohammadi (TNSM), said the latest fighters were taken to the frontier at Bajaur tribal agency in North West Frontier Province. The men were armed with automatic rifles and other weapons, Ismail said.

They were to be taken to Jalalabad to join other volunteers who have crossed in recent days and where the Taliban would decide their future duties, Ismail said. An estimated 4,000 more tribesmen are waiting on the Pakistan side of the border and they will cross into Afghanistan by next Friday, the TNSM chieftain said. "I have consulted the Taliban," he added. "I told them if they need more people we can get them here."
