Re: Cold War analogies First, the economic argument is pretty weak. In a 10+ trillion dollar economy a billion a month is barely a read on the meter. Decisions aren't going to be made on the basis of dollars when it comes to national security. Nobody is arguing against doing whatever is necessary. What is being argued is "What is necessary?" I agree that "fighting a hot war" for 50 years is not realistic and I never claimed that this was likely. But really solving the problem, as opposed to simply retaliating, is going to take some time. I agree that immigration and visa reforms are necessary and I believe they are in process. One of the suggestions I'm surprised hasn't yet been made is simply to void all currently-issued visas. The U.S. could simply say "Effective December 1st all visas issued for travel in and through the United States prior to November 1st are invalid and must be renewed, in person". Those here for legitimate reasons would be given new visas while others would now have invalid visas and be subject to deportation.
