Regarding CF performance, it isn't clear to me at all that the CF is the only factor when it comes to read/write speed. A lot depends on the specific camera, the size of the buffer, the file size, and whether or not it is compressed.

The electronics built into a camera are different, depending on who makes the camera and which model we're talking about. Many of the CF performance tests are done on professional digital cameras. The results from those cameras will differ from other cameras. It's very confusing, and probably the only thing that reall matters is how a particular card works in a particular camera.

With my aging Nikon 950 with 2.1 mp maximum resolution, I admit I'm not terribly happy with the 25-second write time for a TIFF image. If I replace my 950 with the new Olympus that has 5 mp resolution and through-the-lens viewing similar to a true SLR, I may get faster write times by using a compressed image that still has higher resolution than the highest resolution on the Nikon.

Put another way, I wonder if the card makes the difference, or if the major difference in write times is based on the camera and its electronics. I haven't really found the answer to this in the CF card reviews I've read.
