'This all seemed very reasonable at the time'

Not to most of us it didn't. Clearly the theory was considered sufficient to justify brutal action among the few hundreds or thousands who pull the strings of power in DC, and of course many more in your nation were lulled by the dictum 'My country right or wrong'. But you'll never convince the widows and mothers and families of the thirty thousands tortured and murdered by Reagan's contras. You'll never convince the majority of the rest of the world who were watching at the time, nor me.

Actions carry consequences. The United States of America - that great self-styled Cradle of Liberty, whose fine rhetoric was inspiration for the french and mexicana and other revolutions - soiled its name in Nicaragua twice in the last century, in the nineteen eighties and earlier as a military arm of United Fruit. The term 'banana republic' is of US origin, as is the concept. It is a filthy and morally unjustifiable concept, that the US install and support swine like Somoza and Batista and Pinochet because they have economic utility to US interests perceived to be greater than their currently available alternatives. Filthy. Caca. Caca all over the Stars 'n Stripes. The stink will last a long time. That is the consequence of that soporific movie actor's little adventure in Nicaragua.

There was good reason for the US attack to be against both US and international law - Nicaragua is the home of the nicaraguan peoples, it is for them to decide what they do in their nation, and how they do it. Punto.

But it looks like the old vicepresidente of the corrupt Alemán has taken the election ... which, without being there and in touch, is likely the way i would have voted ... but this guy is no prize, they really didn't have any better choices than did Canada or the US in their last elections - mx.yahoo.com
