I should point out though that it was the Dow that took a looong time to recover. If you look at broader measures it recovered much quicker.

From memory (last charts I saw) the small cap index declined dramatically for 3 years and then went UP dramatically for 4 years. In other words, they recovered in about 7 years (back to the peak!). Mid and large cap indexes followed a similar timeframe, although their dips and recoveries were less violent than the small caps.

Can you imagine if the Nasdaq went back to 5000 by 2007 ?!?! There'd be some wealthy people on this board. That's a bit optimistic in my opinion. As you've said, the bubble this time was even bigger than in 1929. The question is, will the economy sink as far as it did in the early 30's. I doubt it.
