OT/The concept of historical polarity.

Roebear. One reason I like that privateer piece is it prompted the memory of a very unusual conceptual approach to historical conflicts that one of my history professors ran by us when I was an undergrad in the late 60s.

Whenever you see a civil war or a war between to nations that are directly north and south of one another, the northerly combatant almost always prevails. Examples are legion:

1 US Civil War.

2. Series of 19th Century conflicts that united Germany under Prussian control.

3. Unification of Italy was dominated by northern population groups.

4. The Vietnam War was won by the North

5. The Reconquista in 15th-16th Century Spain

Professor Cammet (taught the elective course in Italian History, BTW) went on to explain that explanation for this phenomena had ever been successsfully presented in academic reseach circles. And of course it's possible to come up with some very intriguing theories.

But we don't have time to get into Iso's far out stuff like geomagnetic historical predeterminism, etc.

Suffice it to saw that if we were to entend an arbitrary parallel of latitude such as 35 degrees around the globe, the resolution of the oil issue will favor the nations that are for the most part north of that line.
