Christine--

It seems to me that Alexa was talking about the kind of adults with whom she chooses to spend time, not about disadvantaged children.

Amazingly or not, we're all aware of the gap between the rich and the poor, of the horrifying results of inadequate nutrition and nonexistent healthcare, and all the rest of it. Very few of us here on Feelies, or on SI generally, are really rich: if we were, we be too busy giving orders to ensure that the yacht and summer homes were in shape for this year's fun to be able to post very often.

Actually people at the French court just before the revolution lived rather badly. Ghastly crowding, terrible sanitary conditions. And of course the causes of the revolution itself were a great deal more complex than your comment suggests. Revolutions are never really brought about by the oppressed masses, but by intellectuals who think they know what's best for everyone. In the end they rarely do very much to improve the conditions which supposedly spurred them to seize power.

However we're straying from the point here. Oh, well, at least you're a libertine.
