Al Qaeda Suspect Detained

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON

suspected Al Qaeda operative observed meeting with hijacker Khalid Almihdhar in Malaysia in 2000 has been detained in the Middle East for questioning in connection with prior terrorist attacks.
The unnamed suspect was being questioned by intelligence agents about his possible contact with the hijacker, his suspected involvement in the bombing of the destroyer Cole and a foiled plot to bomb a hotel in Jordan filled with Americans during the millennium celebrations, officials said yesterday.

The man was videotaped by Malaysian authorities in January 2000 meeting with Almihdhar and other supporters of terrorist Osama Bin Laden. When the man was linked to the Cole bombing this summer, Almihdhar and one of his associates, Nawaf Alhazmir, were placed on the CIA's terror watch list. The two still managed to slip into the country and were aboard the American Airlines jetliner that crashed into the Pentagon.

The man recently detained is "very important" because he's a midlevel operative in the Al Qaeda terror network, said a retired intelligence official.
