Close up on .NET (emphasis added - this is where the divergence from Java happened, while retaining its (to Microsoft's thinking) benefits...

..."The .NET Framework is the new COM. However, it is technically entirely different to 'Classic COM'. For example, the nearest equivalent to classic COM GUIDs are simple identities decorated with public keys and contained in digitally signed files. The .NET Framework makes no use whatsoever of the Windows registry. And most importantly, IUnknown and reference counting have completely disappeared (except for legacy purposes). As we shall see, the .NET Framework is far more closely related to Java.

The Framework has become the fundamental building block of Microsoft's new .NET strategy to extend Windows as a virtual Internet operating system. With .NET, Microsoft has set out on an ambitious strategy to create a distributed environment that combines rich user-interface support (the XML-based 'Universal Canvas' which will shortly succeed Internet Explorer and the current Windows GUI), modern ways of interfacing with computers (including voice commands, handwriting recognition and so forth), and web-hosted services. Indeed, a possible outcome of .NET is a wholehearted approach towards general hosting of applications on the Internet and new models of service 'rental'."
