When faced with various alternatives, choose the simplest one a la Ockhams Razor: They eliminated the long bond because the smart traders would not play. No good to keep cutting rates like madmen, and they are, if the bond market doesn't cooperate by lowering long rates. The audacity is shocking. Still, it's like a tire tube that needs to explode -- they put their manipulative patch over this, but some other bulge will develop.
