Jim, <<<, how many baseball players could play professional basketball as well as Jordan played baseball?>>>
Danny Ainge come to mind. There are many more cases of failed baseball players succeeding in basketball or football than the other way around. Last year's Heisman trophy winner, I beleive was also a failed baseball player but went on to succeed in football. But, that is not the main point.
The main point is that you have to be an athlete to be a baseball or basketball player and that is not always true for football players. Yes, yes, I know - there are a lot of great athletes in football - but you don't have to be an athlete to succeed. Kyle Turley and Ray Lewis may have certain attributes that allow them to succeed in football - but chances are they do not have sufficient athletic abilities to be good at anything else in sports.
Another way to look at it is that to be a decent boxer, having athletic abilities would help - but to be a good street brawler - athletic abilities aren't absolutely necessary.
Anyhow that is just my personal opinion. To be a lineman on either offense or defense does not require the development of any athletic skills.
If you were a ten year old kid, how do you go about preparing to be an interior lineman. What skills do you develop? Yes, I also know that Monday night football on any night has higher ratings than most baseball's World Series games.
Football is more popular and attracts a certain demographics, but baseball attracts the likes and passions of Bart Giamati, David Halbertam, Doris Kearns Godwin, and Bernard Malamud.
Horses for courses, that kind of stuff.
