While I think their reasons are (were?) sound, I'm not sure I buy into their train of thought now.
I think their mindset is mired in the "old-line" concepts that MADE HP great as opposed to finding ways to generate better synergies in the future.
While PCs aren't the best business to be in now, doesn't mean they won't be in the future. Chrysler wasn't pleased to be in the auto industry in 1978, but found a way to make it a good business 5 years later.
It would have been better to kill this deal early, when these objections made more sense. Now it's all just water under the bridge.
