There were eight different directors for the 10 episodes. My overall impression of the series is that it was superb in recreating the realistic sights/sounds of World War II (as "Private Ryan was), but I'm not sure I got to know any of the characters very well, with the possible exception of Winters. The series followed the book faithfully. Perhaps what was needed was an episode between 2 and 3 or 3 and 4 in which we became better acquainted with the characters. Our local newspaper did a story on one of the surviving members of Easy Company (from Rabbit Hash, Ky.) who was not mentioned in the book or profiled in the series. He said all surviving members of Easy Company were flown to Atlanta or New Orleans to view the series before it was shown on HBO. He said everything was extremely authentic/accurately portrayed except for two things: the soldiers were always much more spread out when they went on patrol and they never talked in that situation.
